Introductory Workshops - for professionals & non-professionals
Introductory Days
Our day-long massage workshops are a wonderful way to gain some practical, hands-on experience of giving healing, loving touch for complete beginners. They also serve as a basis for those interested in going deeper into the work and studying a Practitioner Diploma course, either for self development or to practice professionally. If you're already a bodyworker, yoga or pilates teacher or physiotherapist, the techniques you will learn here are invaluable as an addition to your own practice.
Thai Massage rebalances the flow of Prana ( Life Force energy,or Qi), so supporting our body's innate ability to heal itself. We do this through a combination of rhythmic rocking, acupressure along the system of energy lines (Sen) and passive yoga stretching which is adapted to each person's needs. It is an ancient healing art with its roots in Ayurveda and the Buddhist practices of mindfulness and loving kindness meditation.
We welcome students of all ages and abilites, the only pre-requisite for all courses is that you are able to kneel on a mat on the floor and have reasonable physical fitness. If in doubt, please ask.
Attendance on an Introductory workshop is a pre-requisite for the Practitioner Diploma course
A note on notes!
We tend to give a brief framework of the content as opposed to extensive course notes for our shorter workshops as we prefer the freedom to adapt each workshop to suit the needs of the group on the day. However, the basic techniques and principles shown are all laid out in the beautifully illustrated practical books: Thai Massage by Nicky Smith and Thai Massage and Shiatsu Bodywork. You are encouraged to bring a notepad or camera for your own reference.

Testimonials:
"I really enjoyed the day and found the workshop both inspiring and centering. It helped me think about things I might want to look more into in the future.
Fiona was really good at helping people with no experience in massage (me!!) really understand what it was about and if I had trouble doing something she helped me. As an introductory course it was a good balance of talking and doing."
Cora, Bristol (2010)
"Immense value on many levels from simple enjoyment up to a real eye opener to a practice I knew very little about that is now making me wish to study further.
The day was better than I expected in every way and great value for money! I came with an open mind and unsure of what to expect and I was very pleasantly surprised! ...Just a massive thank-you really!!"
Richard, Bristol (2010)*
* Richard qualified with Bodywisdom as a Practitioner in December 2011!
Massage for Families
Healing touch amongst many family groups and cultures is the most natural thing in the world and yet sometimes due to our lifestyle or upbringing, it can feel very unnatural to touch and hold one another.
This 1 day workshop is a safe, gentle and playful space to reintroduce or reinforce the bonds of loving and healing touch that exist between parent and child, child and parent or siblings. We base our workshops on the principles of Traditional Thai Massage, working thru clothes, with breath, gentle dynamic movement, posture, using bodyweight.Different techniques for different size family members!
They are open to all family members above the age of eight. Bodywisdom School facilitates these workshops on demand, either for larger groups of different families or indvidually designed for you and your family. If you are interested in attending a group workshop or would like to organise a private class, please contact us for more information.
Informal Classes for Couples
These classes are taught in the comfort of your home or at our home clinics. They include anything from how to offer relaxing, loving touch to a partner to massage and techniques as preparation for birth.
What would you like to be able to offer to your partner in terms of massage and touch? We all have everyday aches and pains and going for a massage with a professional is sometimes not an option - or you would like to connect with your loved one by offering a short massage to help ease aching shoulders or a sore back.
We've all experienced receiving well meaning but at times slightly uncomfortable offerings from our loved one at some point. Have you ever, for example, put up with having your partner sit on you while they massage your back?!
These classes are a wonderful opportunity to hone your skills and share that loving touch in a way that feels good for both of you. Classes generally last approximately 3 hours and are tailor-made for you.
